Eviatar, MD, FACS, board certified oculofacial plastic surgeon and Surgical Director of Chelsea Eye and Cosmetic Surgery Associates (www.ChelseaEye.com and www.ChelseaCosmetic.com) is one of the top injectors of Radiesse in NYC and was a lead investigator for the FDA clinical trial evaluating Radiesse for facial enhancement in patients with HIV associates lipodystropy. As an authority in aesthetics, he participates as a member of the National Education Faculty for the companies that make Radiesse, Sculptra Aesthetic, Restylane, ArteFill, Juvederm, and BOTOX Cosmetic. Dr. Eviatar conducts clinical trials and has published and lectured widely on minimally invasive procedures such as injectible agents for facial rejuvenation. He often utilizes an intra-oral technique developed to minimize bruising and travels extensively to train other physicians on advanced injection methods. He was recently featured on CBS using this advanced technique to inject Radiesse and this segment can be viewed below.
What is Radiesse?
Radiesse is an FDA-Approved facial filler that is a calcium-based gel. It can be used to correct both deep folds and lines, and to re-shape the face. Because calcium is a natural product found in the body, no allergy testing is required, and it can be used safely in the body without causing a tissue reaction.
What makes Radiesse different from other fillers?
Radiesse is a versatile facial injectable that can be used for many different types of line correction. Often we combine Radiesse with other wrinkle treatments to achieve full facial rejuvenation.
Because Radiesse is the thickest of the true wrinkle fillers, it works well for lifting. It can be used as a facial implant to re-shape the face and for a cheek lift. Radiesse can also be used to fill the mid-face to reduce under eye bags or to help with a jowly look.
When Radiesse is diluted with additional anesthetic, the consistency becomes softer, allowing it to be injected more superficially to reduce finer lines.
How does it work?
Radiesse works in two different ways…
1. 90% of the volume or correction is achieved through the actual filler. So, what you see is what you get. It creates an instant result that looks natural.
2. 10% of the volume correction is from the patient’s own collagen. The collagen stimulation produces long term results.
What is the difference between Radiesse and Sculptra*?
Sculptra* is a collagen stimulator—there is no direct filling from the product and no immediate effect. Whereas with Radiesse, an immediate effect occurs because only about 10% of the correction comes from the patient’s own collagen.
*Dr. Eviatar is also the #1 Sculptra injector in NYC. Learn more at www.Sculptra-Doctor.com
How long is the procedure?
The procedure itself is quick. As with most injectables (BOTOX, Evolence, Juvederm, Sculptra, Restylane, Captique, Hylaform), the procedure takes anywhere from 5-15 minutes depending on the amount of correction desired.
Is it painful?
The procedure is not painful. A topical anesthetic is applied to the area to be injected, and the material is mixed with an anesthetic. As Radiesse is injected, the face becomes numb. It is a quick and comfortable procedure.
What are the side effects?
The most common side effect is bruising. We recommend that patients take no blood thinners, aspirin, etc, for a week prior to treatment. We also apply ice packs before and after the procedure to minimize bruising and swelling at the injection site.
The other side effects of any filler can be bumps or nodules. These are rare with Radiesse; less than 1% of our patients have experienced these side effects. If these bumps or nodules occur, they can be treated with massage or injection. Infection and serious side effects are extremely rare, as are allergies to the material.
Is there any downtime?
There is no downtime other than that due to mild swelling and bruising, which can be concealed with makeup. Often, since the results are instant, an immediate liquid facelift can be achieved. Patients can return to work right after treatment.
Being cautious, I always tell people not to have a treatment right before a major event, in case of bruising, but unless a patient is in the public eye, there really is no need to take time off.
How does your unique Intra-oral technique minimize bruising?
Watch Dr. Eviatar on CBS below!
Delivering any injectable through the skin or muscle can cause bruising. The Intra-oral technique delivers the material through the gum, and the chance of bruising becomes very minimal. This technique is great for treating areas around the eyes, the mid-face, and the chin. The gum area is numbed so you won’t feel any pain.
What is the average number of treatments someone needs to get correction?
While it depends on the needs of each individual, typically two syringes of product are needed. We often inject a few syringes to re-shape the face, help reduce wrinkles and correct fine lines. 5-6 syringes are used if someone has severe facial wasting. If only the naso-labial folds are to be treated, only 1 syringe is needed.
The material comes in different syringe sizes so treatment can be customized to suit the patient’s personal needs.
We advise the patient to return one month after treatment to determine if an additional refinement or correction is necessary.
Where can you have the product injected?
Radiesse is versatile and can be used in different areas of the face for the most natural appearing results. It can be used around the eyes, on the nose, or to treat sagging ear lobes. (Some of these treatments are considered “off label”). It can also be injected in the body to treat an irregularity from liposuction or breast surgery. I do not feel it is the best filler for the lips.
I think it is critical to inject fillers in small quantities in different areas of the face to achieve an aesthetic balance. You usually don’t want only your cheek or chin to be corrected because it may look fake. Post treatment, I want my patients to look younger but look natural. Most patients want to appear healthy and well rested not look like they’ve had a procedure.
How long does it last?
Radiesse lasts from one to 2 years, depending on how the body absorbs it and the location of treatment. The results may begin to fade after 6-8 months. For example, if I perform a liquid facelift (a procedure where the face is re-shaped with Radiesse) I recommend that patients return in 6-8 months to maintain the correction, often with just a small syringe.
We recommend that all patients have follow up appointments every 10-14 months to assess their need for additional refinements. The more volume a patient requires initially, the more often he or she would need to come back for follow-up injections in order to maintain the wrinkle correction and facial fullness. With follow-up injections scheduled regularly, the results will easily last several years.
Radiesse is long lasting but not permanent which is ideal. We all age differently, and fillers and toxins should be customized to each patient’s face as they age. These refinements allow our patients to maintain a youthful look over time without looking “done”, and because Radiesse is not permanent, patients are not precluded from having other treatments in the future as new products become available.
Because I have such extensive experience with all of the facial fillers and specialize in treating the face, I can combine Radiesse with Sculptra treatments, lasers, thermage, Juvederm, Dysport, Botox, etc., and work with each patient to be sure they achieve the optimum outcome.
